The Summer Blockbuster Returns
How Twisters reminds us of summer nostalgia
Growing up in the 90s, my summer’s were filled with time on bikes, too many snow cones to count, and eagerly anticipating each summer’s blockbuster movies.
Movies like Men in Black, Diehard or Jurassic Park dominated the summer viewing schedule, and it was always a treat to go with the entire family and your friends to see these movies.
Due to a number of circumstances, the summer blockbuster has seemingly slowed down. Gone are the times of 2 or 3 huge movies per month releasing, now they are spread out throughout the year. Part of this is due to COVID reshoots, the changing movie theatre and streaming models, and just overall demand. But it is a changing and perhaps bygone era.
Enter Twisters. Ever since I saw the first trailer, I’ve said that this is my most anticipated movie of the summer. I mean just watch.
It has everything you could want in a summer blockbuster. A great soundtrack. An existential threat like tornadoes, and actors you’ve come to know in the last few years and enjoy like Glenn Powell and Daisy Edgar Jones.
If you go into this movie expecting to be blown away (pun intended) by the story, this isn’t the movie for you. The story is silly. But if you go in wanting to be entertained and escape the absolute nightmare of a world right now, this is the movie for you. It has all the best beats of a summer blockbuster movie, and is a highly enjoyable experience.
I’d also really recommend this one for an in theatre experience. You should see this with other people. See it on a giant screen, eating popcorn and grinning the entire time. It’s an incredible experience, and one that describes the genre perfectly.
